Lindsay Sparrock

Lindsey Sparrock is doctoral student in the Behavior, Cognition, and Neuroscience (BCaN) program at American University with a longstanding interest in tobacco research. Her research is inspired by the need for additional, targeted support toward vulnerable populations. As an early researcher, she finds this attitude toward tobacco research essential, and it keeps her passionate about learning new research approaches and skills. She earned her BS in Psychology, with a minor in NeuroStudies at Longwood University and her MS in Neuroscience at American University. She is currently conducting research in the Behavioral Pharmacology and Health Promotion Lab at American with Dr. Laura Juliano. Her research interests include health disparities, youth and young adult tobacco use, decision making, motivation and expectancy, as well as smoking prevention and intervention strategies. Eric Turnquist

Eric Turnquist is a 3rd year doctoral student in the Clinical Psychology PhD program. His research interests include identifying treatment targets for addiction and implementing novel, brief, and accessible interventions. During his time in the lab, he has completed and published his thesis work investigating the efficacy of a brief cognitive intervention for improving decision making among dependent e-cigarette users. Currently, he is collecting data for his dissertation that examines how young adult dependent e-cigarette users respond to daily cognitive intervention via text message during a 7-day quit attempt. Ben Gilligan

Ben Gilligan is in his final year of undergraduate education at American University. His research interests include discrepancies in substance abuse rates amongst minority populations, tobacco/nicotine dependency, and withdrawal. As a lead research assistant in Dr. Juliano’s Behavioral Pharmacology and Health Promotion lab, he is assisting Ananias Hayes on his study regarding exposure to discrimination and smoke cravings amongst African American smokers, and Eric Turnquist’s study focusing on daily cognitive interventions for dependent e-cigarette users.
